Christian Education
From our Sunday School curriculum to thought-provoking Adult Forums, Christian Education is a vital part of life at Roland Park Presbyterian Church.
About Sunday School
The Sunday School at Roland Park Presbyterian Church seeks to encourage students to learn the basics of the Christian faith, to lead students to make the Christian faith their own, and to encourage the students to practice their faith in their daily lives.
All Education classes and activities are rooted in the Presbyterian/Reformed Tradition: Biblically based, historically informed, socially engaged, communally nurtured, and ecumenically involved. Whether in worship, at work in the world, or in the classroom, Roland Park Church is an active, vital congregation that welcomes everyone into our house.
In order to achieve these goals, our Sunday School staff will:
- Recognize all students as children of God and therefore as gifts from God.
- Encourage Bible literacy, as the Bible is the primary source of knowledge about God and Jesus Christ.
- Provide an age-appropriate curriculum in an environment that is safe, conducive to learning, open to questions, fun, exciting, and where students are loved for who they are.
- Encourage regular Sunday School attendance and life-long participation in the Christian education process.
Our Sunday School Classes
Sunday School at RPPC is held during the 10:00 am worship service. The children begin their worship in the sanctuary with their families, then leave the service following the Time for All God’s Children. They spend the remainder of the worship hour in their Sunday school class with a volunteer teacher from our congregation. Children from birth through age 3 are welcomed into our nursery for their own Sunday school class either at the beginning of service, or after the older children are excused from service.
On the lower level, we have three classes. The Yellow Classroom houses students aged 3-5, the Green Classroom welcomes those students aged 6-7, and the Orange Classroom accommodates those students aged 8-10. During their Sunday school time, the students can be found engaging in discussions with their classmates and teachers, playing games, exploring through art, science, cooking, music, and drama to help them interpret the bible story of the day and connect it meaningfully to their everyday lives.
Opportunities for Learning Outside of Sunday School
Book Club
Students aged 10-12 are invited to attend a Book Club that meets after worship periodically. Books are chosen by the group, and have, to date, included the works of C.S. Lewis. Discussions are led by an adult leader.
Youth Events
Students in Middle school and High school are engaged throughout the year in special activities relating to mission, service, fellowship, and fun. Some past events have included Box City (a homelessness project), the 30-Hour Famine, working at food banks, harvesting produce at First Fruits Farm, and planning and leading worship services.
Family Fun Nights
Throughout the summer, our church family is invited to a series of events that encompass learning, reflection, and fellowship. A shared meal is followed by a time of storytelling and singing, and then the group is split between arts and crafts activities, games, and reflection time in a spirituality center, all of which are built around the story or theme of the evening.
Adult Education
Periodically, we offer a class or a series of classes for adults in our congregation that meet following worship time. After a shared meal, participants have been engaged in conversations surrounding church polity and practice, the history of our denomination, worship planning, and much more.
