Music
The music worship program at Roland Park Presbyterian Church is very active and welcomes all who wish to participate in music making to the glory of God. Our musical ensembles include:
Chancel Choir
The 25 member Chancel Choir is directed by Dr. Phillip Collister. Rehearsals are Thursday nights from 7:30-9:00 p.m. from the Thursday after Labor Day until the Thursday before Memorial Day.
The Chancel Choir provides weekly worship music for services and is supported by a core of dedicated volunteers as well as professional soloists. The Chancel Choir is a welcoming and inclusive community of sacred amateur as well as professional musicians who are devoted to quality music making but who are able to do so in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Choir rehearsals are marked by focused work, laughter, devotionals and prayers, hymn singing, and an over-all sense of worship music with purpose. The Chancel Choir is open to all people from the more novice choral singer to those with much experience and new members are encouraged to join the choirs’ ranks.
Over the years the Chancel Choir has had a distinguished record of providing high quality sacred choral works of diverse styles. Everything from Renaissance Motets to modern day spiritual and gospel arrangements as well as contemporary Christian arrangements are included in the Chancel Choir’s repertoire. The over all musical style of the choir could be described as contemporary / traditional with works by such composers as Handel, Bach, Faure, John Ness Beck, Craig Courtney, John Rutter, Jonathan Wilcocks, John Bell, Benjamin Britten, Moses Hogan, Andre Thomas and many others. The Chancel Choir library includes over 1000 anthems and/or books of anthems collected over the choir’s nearly 75 year history. During the holiday seasons of Easter and Christmas the Chancel Choir prepares special music which is often accompanied by small orchestras, chamber ensembles or brass ensembles. Soloists frequently provide additional anthems or solo works to enhance the anthems sung by the full choir.
