What can challenging behavior tell us about the needs, experiences, and circumstances beneath the surface?

Join the Roland Park Presbyterian Church Racial Justice Committee for an evening with Tyrone Kent, Director of Roca Baltimore, as he explores trauma, relationships, accountability, and meaningful change in the lives of young men.

Tyrone will invite us to look beyond behavior itself and consider what may be driving it—while also holding firmly to the importance of accountability. He will discuss how trauma can shape the way young people think, respond, and make decisions; why understanding behavior does not mean excusing it; and how trusted relationships can help create the conditions for lasting change.

The conversation will explore:

• What may be underneath challenging behaviors
• The impact of trauma on how young people think, respond, and make decisions
• Why explaining behavior does not mean excusing it
• The importance of trust, consistency, and accountability
• How adults can create environments where change is possible
• Moving from behavior management toward meaningful, long-term change

Tyrone’s presentation will be approximately 30 minutes, followed by time for questions and answers. Light refreshments and an opportunity for continued conversation with Tyrone will follow.

Tyrone Kent joined Roca in January 2023 and serves as Director of Roca Baltimore. He brings many years of experience working with young adults in social development, safety and security, coaching, and program leadership. His professional certifications include Behavioral Management Techniques, Crisis Intervention, and Managing Aggressive Behavior.

A native Baltimorean, Tyrone is deeply committed to the city and to the young men Roca serves. He believes in ensuring safety first and building transformational relationships second, and he has seen firsthand the difference that opportunity, attention, accountability, and support can make in a young person’s life.
