Throughout September, October, and November, we are honored to welcome esteemed speakers who will share their experiences and initiatives within these crucial domains. Each speaker session will be followed by a time for light refreshments and informal discussion, fostering a space for meaningful dialogue and community connection. By attending these monthly talks, you’ll gain insight, inspiration, and a call to action for advocating and enacting positive change.

Join us on September 19th at 7 p.m. in our sanctuary as we welcome Wayman Scott, MS, MTS, LGPC, who is Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Relations of GBMC HealthCare Pathways Project and Dr. Martine Bell, DNP, CRNP who is Clinical Manager, Advanced Practitioners at GBMC. They will lead a profound discussion on “Dismantling Structural Racism in Healthcare.” This insightful session will delve into the causes and consequences of racial health disparities, focusing on Baltimore City as a case study. Discover how GBMC healthcare is working to break down systemic barriers, foster trust, expand access to care, and address social determinants of health.
Wayman Scott serves Gilchrist and GBMC Health Partners as the Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community Relations. He works in community heath equity programs to increase access to care among underserved communities. Wayman has presented nationally and locally on racial equity, mental health, and grief and loss. He holds an MS in Clinical Mental Health from Loyola University Maryland, a Masters of Theology from Washington Theological Union, and an executive certificate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from Georgetown University.
Dr. Martine Bell, DNP, FNP-C, has been in healthcare for nearly 20 years. As a Registered Nurse in the emergency department, she saw how health disparities drive hospital utilization and affect long-term health outcomes for different groups of people. After becoming a nurse practitioner and graduating with a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Drexel University, Dr. Bell continues to explore ways to educate on health disparities and improve health outcomes for underserved and underrepresented populations.
Baltimore’s Civil Rights Heritage: Shaping the National Movement
Speaker: Johns Hopkins, Executive Director, Baltimore Heritage

In October, we are honored to host Mr. Johns Hopkins, Executive Director of Baltimore Heritage, as he guides us through Baltimore’s Civil Rights history. Baltimore’s airport is named after Civil Rights giant Thurgood Marshall and plaques in Fell’s Point show where Frederick Douglass took his stand against slavery and for equality. In addition to these well-known leaders, dozens of other Baltimoreans committed themselves to struggle for Civil Rights and helped shape The Movement locally and nationally. Baltimore Heritage has spent three years documenting Baltimore’s Civil Rights legacy for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Join us to learn more how Baltimore has shaped the Civil Rights Movement for over 100 years.
Johns Hopkins has been the executive director of Baltimore Heritage since 2003. Before that, Johns worked for the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development developing and implementing smart growth and neighborhood revitalization programs. Johns holds degrees from Yale University, George Washington University Law School, and the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment.
