Discussion Questions:
1. Joy in the Unexpected
• Jesus tells three parables of something lost being found. Why do you think joy and celebration are such central parts of these stories?
• Can you recall a time in your life when something or someone dear to you was returned? What did the celebration feel like?
2. The Rule of Three…and the Twist
• Jesus sets up a pattern: Lost sheep—rejoicing, lost coin—rejoicing, lost son—rejoicing… but then we get a twist with the older son. Why do you think Jesus broke the pattern?
• How do you relate to the older brother? Have you ever felt like someone else received grace that you deserved?
3. Grace, Not Deserving
• The father throws a party for his younger son with no questions asked. How does this challenge our ideas of who is “deserving” of love, grace, or belonging?
• Do you ever struggle with feeling not enough? How might this story offer comfort?
4. Choosing to Join the Celebration
• The party is already happening—our only choice is whether or not to join. What keeps people (or ourselves) standing outside the celebration?
• What might it look like to be someone who invites others in?
5. Living the Invitation
• Mary Oliver writes, “Joy is not made to be a crumb.” How can you fully embrace and share joy in a world full of hard news?
• What small act of celebration, reconciliation, or joy can you initiate this week—in your family, workplace, or community?
